Sailing Classes

We sail Heron, Laser, Sabot, Windsurfer and Open classes at Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club on Sydney's Northern Beaches most weekends between September and April. Please download the calendar for more information.

The racing at NLSC is very casual, with as much emphasis on socialising as there is on sailing.

The club races Herons each Sunday as per the calendar. In the morning, the juniors race each other over a set course, whereby a junior is promoted to ‘skipper’ for the morning and steers the boat. In the afternoon, the ‘seniors’ get to have a go and the roles are reversed. This level of involvement keeps all crews interested, and provides a great learning experience for our up-and-coming sailors. The Laser fleet joins the Herons in the afternoon for the senior races, providing more competition and a little bit of variety.

The races we run include long course (45 minute), short course (20 min), marathon (6 hour) and handicap starts. These are varied throughout the year to provide a bit of variety. Short course days usually have 3 or 4 races, and the others are single events. The marathon is a relay race where people team up and "pass the baton" between laps of the race course.

Whilst the more experienced members of the club are always more than willing to help out the new and inexperienced, we also run a sailing school every year for those very new to the sport. The club is committed to growing the sport of sailing, and therefore do everything we can to encourage the next generation to get out on the water and get involved in this fantastic sport.

The club runs regular coaching mornings and rules and tactics classes to help kids and adults alike improve their sailing skills. On the social front, we also have events for our members such as bowling nights and an annual presentation night.
