Learn to Sail

Sailing Programs at Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club

At Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club (NLSC), we’re passionate about introducing kids to the joy of sailing and helping them grow into confident, skilled, and competitive sailors. We offer a progressive, youth-focused pathway with three structured programs. Please note, we do not currently offer Learn to Sail programs for adults.

🚀 Program Pathway

Our sailing development pathway consists of:

  1. Learn to Sail (LTS) – For complete beginners

  2. Intermediate Squad – For sailors who have completed LTS

  3. Development Squad (Dev Squad) – For sailors who are regatta-ready and want to compete regularly

🧭 Learn to Sail (LTS)

This is where the adventure begins! In our Learn to Sail program, your child will be introduced to the fundamentals of sailing in a safe and supportive environment. By the end of the season, they’ll be confidently sailing a dinghy on their own.

They’ll learn:

  • How to rig their own boat

  • Capsize recovery

  • Points of sail

  • Tacking

  • Jybing

Season Dates: From after the Spring school holidays until April 2026
Note: we also run LTS programs condensed in a week during School Holidays. Stay tuned on our website for availability.
When: Sunday mornings, 8:15am – 11:00am
Ages: 8 and up
Boats: Provided by the club (typically Optimists; other dinghies may be used for older kids)

Register your interest for our Learn to Sail program

Important Notes:

  • Places are limited and allocated at the discretion of the NLSC committee. Expressing interest does not guarantee a spot.

  • A trial day will be held in September before families commit to the full program and club membership.

  • NLSC is a 100% volunteer-run club. Parent participation is a key part of club membership and program success.

🌊 Intermediate Squad

This stage is all about building up the confidence and competence to be on the cusp of racing. It’s a natural next step for kids who love being on the water and want to take it further. This program is for kids who’ve completed the Learn to Sail program and want to continue building their skills and confidence.

Focus:

  • Strengthening sailing technique

  • Gaining independence on the water

  • Preparing to participate in regattas

Season Dates: From after the Spring school holidays until April 2026
When: Sunday mornings, 10:30am – 12:30pm
Ages: 8 and up
Boats: Provided by the club (typically Optimists; other dinghies may be used for older kids)

🏁 Development Squad (Dev Squad)

The Dev Squad is for sailors who are ready to enter the competitive world of youth sailing. It’s designed for kids who’ve progressed through Intermediate Squad and are now ready to race. At this stage, we encourage and support families to attend regattas across the state. Our community travels together, sharing logistics, knowledge, and support to ensure each sailor can thrive both on and off the water.

Focus:

  • Regular regatta participation

  • Boat tuning and race strategies

  • Building mental resilience

  • Travelling to events as a team

  • Supporting each other on and off the water

Season Dates: From September 2025 until April 2026
When:
Sunday mornings, 9am – 12:30pm
Ages:
8 and up
Boats:

  • Sailors may provide their own boat

  • Club boats may be hired for the season, depending on availability
